Answers for the Tag Game chase

This FAQ is the long-form reference for taggame.app: the free browser chase where one runner is always It. It covers how to start, how the countdown and scoring work, and why progress lives on your device instead of an account.

If you want a walkthrough with rules and controls, read how to play Tag Game. For strategy, see the tips page. To play immediately, open the Tag arena.

Getting started

What Tag Game is, whether it is free, and how to start a run in your browser.

What is Tag Game?

Tag Game is a free online arcade chase game based on the classic playground game of tag. You control a runner in an arena alongside three AI chasers. One participant is always "It." If It tags you, you become It and get a short countdown to tag someone back before it is game over. taggame.app is a fast, modern, single-player take on tag built to run entirely in your browser.

Is Tag Game free to play online?

Yes. taggame.app is completely free and runs entirely in your browser. There is nothing to buy, download, or install, no ads interrupting a run, and no premium tiers.

Do I need to download or install anything?

No. Tag Game is a 100% browser-based game built with HTML, JavaScript, and the Web Audio API for sound. It loads in Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari, and other modern browsers on desktop and mobile without a plugin or installer.

Is Tag Game based on a real game?

Yes — Tag Game is a browser implementation of the classic playground game of tag: one player is "It," everyone else runs, and getting tagged passes It along. taggame.app adapts that rule set for solo play against AI chasers, with a countdown that recreates the pressure of needing to tag someone back quickly.

Is Tag Game family-friendly?

Tag Game is a single-player arcade chase with no chat, no user-generated content, and no in-game purchases. It is suitable for a wide age range and plays in short, replayable sessions.

Rules and scoring

How the It countdown, tagging back, scoring, and game over work.

How do I play Tag Game?

Move with WASD or the arrow keys (drag on touchscreens) to run around the arena. Avoid the chaser marked with a red ring — that is who is currently "It." If they touch you, you become It, and a countdown ring appears around your character. Tag any other bot before the countdown reaches zero to pass It along and keep running. Press Space to dash for a short speed burst.

How does scoring work in Tag Game?

You earn points every second you are not It. Successfully tagging a bot back while you are It adds a bonus on top of that. Time spent as It earns nothing, so the fastest way to a high score is spending as little time as possible carrying It.

What happens when I get tagged?

Getting tagged makes you It. A shrinking countdown ring appears around your character — you have a few seconds to touch another bot and pass It along. If the countdown reaches zero while you are still It, the run ends and your final score is recorded.

Is there a dash or speed boost in Tag Game?

Yes, two kinds. Your character has a dash on a short cooldown — press Space or tap the on-screen Dash button for a quick burst of speed. The arena also has boost pads that grant a temporary speed increase to anyone who runs over them, chaser or runner alike.

What are the controls for Tag Game?

Use WASD or the arrow keys on a keyboard — both work at once, so use whichever feels natural. Space triggers a dash. On a touchscreen, drag anywhere on the arena to steer and tap the Dash button for the same speed burst. The M key toggles sound on and off.

Strategy and difficulty

How to survive longer, how the chase speed ramps up, and how to handle being It.

How do you win Tag Game?

There is no final win screen — Tag Game is an endless survival chase. The "win" is beating your own best score and longest survival time, which are saved on your device. The core skill is avoiding It when you can, and when you cannot, immediately targeting the nearest bot to tag back before your countdown expires.

Does Tag Game get harder over time?

Yes. Chaser speed increases gradually the longer a run lasts, so surviving five minutes is meaningfully harder than surviving thirty seconds. There are no selectable difficulty levels — everyone starts at the same pace and the chase escalates from there. See the chase levels page for details.

What should I do the instant I become It?

Identify the nearest bot immediately rather than the one that looks easiest to catch — the countdown is short enough that distance matters more than angle. Use your dash on the final approach, not from far away, since a bot has time to react and change direction if you close the gap too early.

Why did a chaser suddenly get faster?

That is the difficulty ramp working as intended. Bot speed increases in small steps roughly every 20 seconds of survival time, with no cap-out until well into a long run. It is not a bug — it is what keeps an endless chase from staying easy forever.

Can bots tag each other without me being involved?

Yes. When a bot is It, it will chase whichever participant is nearest — sometimes that is you, sometimes it is another bot. It can pass between bots with no effect on your score or countdown; you are only at risk when a chaser actually reaches you.

Devices, saving, and accounts

Mobile play, browsers, local progress, apps, and why a run might disappear.

Does Tag Game save my progress?

Yes. Your best score, longest survival time, and games played are saved locally in your own browser. Nothing is sent to a server, and there is no account or login. A different phone, a new browser profile, or cleared site data will look like a fresh start.

Can I play Tag Game on mobile?

Yes. Tag Game is touch-first: drag anywhere on the arena to steer your character, and tap the on-screen Dash button for a speed burst. The layout adapts to phones, tablets, and desktops without needing a separate app.

Can I play Tag Game offline?

Tag Game is a browser game and needs a connection to load the page the first time. After that, some browsers may keep the tab responsive without a network connection, but there is no dedicated offline app or install package.

Is there a Tag Game app?

No separate app is required — the game is the website. You can bookmark it or add the tab to your phone's home screen if your browser supports that, but you still play in the browser.

Do I need an account to play Tag Game?

No. There is no sign-up, no email gate, and no profile. Your best score and stats stay in this browser on this device.

How do I reset my Tag Game progress?

Open Stats from the game menu, tap Reset progress, then confirm with the second tap. That clears your best score, longest survival time, and games played on this browser. It cannot be undone.

Why did my Tag Game progress disappear?

Local saves are lost if you clear cookies or site data for taggame.app, switch browsers, use a private window that has since closed, or open the game on a different device. Because the save never left your browser, we cannot recover it from our side.

What browsers does Tag Game work on?

Any current browser with JavaScript support: Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari on desktop, plus their mobile counterparts. If the arena does not respond to input, try updating the browser, disabling a strict script blocker for this site, and reloading.
